Later in the story they decide to canoe at St. Joe River. In this part of the story the mother realizes her true feelings about Michael and Zoe. About Michael she says, “I could like him, if only he were not turning blind. Or if he were not with my daughter. I want more for Zoe”. (Lines 115-117) Here we get the impression that the mother likes Michael as the person he is, but she wishes that he wasn’t turning blind. She absolutely wants the best for her daughter, but she is afraid that he won’t be able to make her happy. She likes Michael, but not for her daughter. It also seems like that the mother and the daughter has a strong relationship, even from when she was a young kid. About their relationship she says,” That year after her father left….Sometimes I felt Zoe and I were growing up together. Other times I felt as though I were eleven and she thirty”. (Lines 87-90) They were always bonded in a good way, they had a good relationship between them. The mother obviously misses the old days and she remembers how it was back then. It seems like Michael is getting between them and breaks their bond. The mother is afraid that Michael will have a huge impact on Zoe’s life and that she later will forget the mother.
