Themes and literary technique

This story has the theme of the tragedy of war, particularly civil war. The conflict was between supporters and opponents of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Liam O'Flaherty fought in the war on the Anti-Treaty or "Republican" side. He had also fought in the First World War in the British Army and he therefore gives a realistic portrayal of war. O'Flaherty later grew deeply disillusioned with the beliefs of the anti-treaty Republicans and Irish Nationalism in general, The Sniper reflects this feeling of the futility and tragedy of the Civil War. Such themes can also be seen in O'Flaherty's short novel, The Informer. Arguably, The Sniper also condemns the glorification of violence which O'Flaherty himself had participated in his youth.

There are two main themes. First, that civil war can pit brother against brother. Second, the separation and demoralization that war can inspire within a person. The soldier did not give the kill a second thought, he never stops to wonder who that man is, who depends on him, who loves him, or why he is there. Only after he discovers that its his brother can it be assumed he feels remorse.

The story is also a great example of "Curiosity Killed the Cat." Had the protagonist not been curious enough to check the corpse, he would not have been further plagued by the fact that he'd killed his brother.

Irlandsemnet er det mest komplicerede du har og det er vigtigt at forstå rigtigt. Så brug noget tid på det.
