The main character Charlie Stowe is twelve years old. He lives in England with his middleclass family next to the ocean. Charlie deals with the problem that his father is never at home. It is essential for a boy to have a father as a role model. A person you can look up to and ask how to behave in different situations. The problem between Charlie and Mr Stowe is that they have no close relationship, so Charlie cannot ask his father how to handle problems.
At school the other boys tease him for never had smoked, despite his father is tobacconist. The friends teasing, suggests on bad friendship, and particularly at such a ridiculous thing to smoke or not. I only thought that it is a good thing, that he has not tried it. I do not think it is so exiting for Charlie to smoke, when he is surrounded by tobacco all day long, but Charlie will not be a loser in his friend’s eyes. So he takes a cigarette from his father, which he has no problem with, because he do not love him. He thought his father is unreal to him. Although he thinks his father is an idiot, is he still loves his mother. Charlie loves his mother for her big noisy presence and her noisy charity.
Since the father is never home, he left Charlie’s mother to punish him, if he did something bad. Under WWI was it probably not the woman of the family who punished their children, so that Charlie’s mother punished him was unusually – the history take place during WWI.
At the end of the story Charlie realizes that he loves his father.

Charlie’s father is a bastard, according himself. He is never at home, and your never know where he is. I think it is a bad father there not tells where he is or what he’s doing. You do not know when he gets home or when you will see him again and it does not suggest that he communicate much with his family. I do not think his family knows that he is a spy, and that explains why he is never home and why he is not that communicative – as it is a profession no need to know. That he is a spy, says that he is trying to live a double life, then we know he also is a tobacconist. My first adoption of “I Spy” was Charlie’s parents were poorly educated. Which they still can be, but the father is maybe trying to get a lower social status with being tobacconist, than he is in reality, and the man is probably clever enough, then his profession requires a big brain to complete.
The father is cold and more or less careless to his family. That can we see, when one of the duty men asks “Don’t you want to speak to your wife?” and he gets the answer “Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow”.
