The short story “Driving” by Suzanne Krama is about an American  woman named Yvonne from America, who has moved to Japan because she is married with to a Japanese named Ryu. It is a big step, because the his culture is rather different from American culture.pretty much different. In Japan, Yvonne don’t does not drive a car, and it is up to her husband to transport her.man to drive her anywhere. Yvonne has a mother-in-law who interferes a lot with in Yvonne and Ryu’s life. But one day when Mr. Hamada died dies of a heart attack, the mother-in-law does not don’t want to live with Ryu and Yvonne, she just wants to stay at home. Therefore Yvonne has to learn to drive a car in Japan because if there is an emergency she has to help her, because Ryu may be busy because of his job. have to work long hours and may be too busy. Which This results in causes that Ryu decides d to move in with his mother a for several days to help her. It was is a hard time for Yvonne, even though she knows that Japanese men often live d separately from their families and returning to their wives and children only on at the weekends. Mrs. Hamada was really spoilt. Ryu takes his mother to the beauty salon, to the art museum and so on. And one day Mrs. Hamada decides to go on a tour to Malaysia, and all over around the world. This makes Yvonne really bitter, because this is what she has always dreamt of.always has a dream about to do. Therefore she realizes d that she has to learn to drive a car in Japan, so she does not don’t end up like her mother-in-law.
