Mr. Loveday’s Little Outing: Test paper

The Moping’s are from the ruling class, the upper class.
At the asylum Mr. Loveday is Lord Moping’s private secretary. Lord Mopings social position has developed into megalomania. An example is when Angela meets her father, Lord Moping, for the first time in many years. Unfortynately he doesn’t recognize her, which Mr. Loveday apologizes for.

2)
The presentations we get of the characters are very humorous.
Mr. Loveday who is the main character, is kind of hard to understand. When you first meet him, he seems to be a very kind man and as it says in the text:”… an elderly little man with full white hair and an expression of great kindness.” At this point, or actually at no point you would get the idea that he would go out and commit a murder. This is what makes Mr. Loveday a rather interesting person. One day he is this really kind grandpa- type, and the next he is a cold-blooded murderer. I think that his personality can be interpreted in many ways but I chose this one:
When he is at the Asylum he is secure in a safe environment with authorities, here he has something to hold on to. He has this thirst of killing, so when he is outside the safe walls he can’t hold back and he has to kill someone to make that thirst go away.
Lord Moping is a dominating he is suffering from megalomania; his desire for complete control has no limit. This self-obsession, as such, is one possible explanation for why Lord Moping has tried to commit suicide; he can’t stand to be controlled by anyone.
Angela:
She seems to be very good and very innocent but also very naïve. She doesn’t questioning anyone at the asylum for being mentally ill.

3) Name symbolism:
Mr. Loveday: He would love to exercise his secret passion one day.
Lord/Lady Moping: Lord is a title used in front of the names of male peers and officials of very high rank. A title given in to a woman or girl who has the social rank of a peer, or to the wife of a peer or knight: If Lord Moping should give himself a social rank; he would probably place himself in a class of a peer or a knight. He has the belief that he is very much more important and powerful than he really is.
Angela: Is of cause angel.

4) Themes/ contrasts / comment:
There are quite a few themes in this text so I will just name some of the most important:
Lord Moping’s megalomania, safety in an environment and irony.
Lord Moping’s megalomania shows an unnaturally great desire for power and control, and that is one of the important themes in the interpretation on Mr. Loveday’s mind.
Mr. Loveday is totally dependent on safe environments where he can feel secure, as I mentioned earlier.
Irony:
I think this story shows a quite cynical humour from Evelyn Waugh’s side.
