"The grammar of old English resembled Latin and modern German. The word order was different from English as we know it today, and there were fewer loanwords from other languages than there are today. All this changed completely in the Middle English period (from 1066 to 1500), when French speaking Normans invaded Britain. The grammar changed and many French word entered the English language. English has an unusual history and it fascinating to see how different nations have influenced it. The result is a language which has a richer vocabulary than most other languages. Therefore  it is not surprising that it has become a global language. Several factors have caused this development. For example many speakers of English carried their language and culture with them as the travelled into every corner of the globe. This made English geographically widespread. In fields such as computers and aviation, English is the dominant language."
