England does not have any written fundamental law. In 1264 the first Parliament met and from that time on the English fundamental law has gradually developed. It is compounded in a numerous individual Acts of Parliament.
Even though the Parliament has not known bloody revolutions, the institution has gone through some insecure periods. In the conflict between the Catholic and the Protestant, a group of Catholics tried to blow up the Parliament in 1605. Guy Fawkes was the leader of “the Gunpowder Plot”, and even today this event is celebrated by English children who burn a Guy Fawkes puppet on the 5th of November every year.
Every year on the first Tuesday in November, the queen opens the Parliament with pomp and circumstance; ever since “the Gunpowder Plot” the “Beefeaters”, who bear lanterns, have looked through the Parliament’s cellar to find powder barrels on this day.
By accident the Parliament burnt down in 1834 caused by a superheating of the heating system. Two architects won the competition of the new Parliament. They drew the present buildings which look like a gothic castle and are used even today.
Visitors can walk through the buildings on Saturdays and weekdays, when the Parliament is not sitting. If the Parliament is in session, the visitors can only see the Westminster Hall from the 11th century or they can wait in the line to get to the auditorium.
The Parliament which lies on the Thames and was originally a royal palace, is also called the Palace of Westminster. It consists of an upper house whose members are called “the Lords” or “the Peers” and a lower house which is called “the House of Commons”.
Until recently the Labour Party and the Conservative Party - the last-mentioned is also under the name the Tories – the biggest Parties; the Liberal Party was number three. The conflict in the Labour Party a few years ago led to the formation of the Social Democratic Party, who is now working together with the Liberal Party under the name the Alliance. Furthermore there are members of the Parliament who come from Northern Ireland and there are Scottish nationalists.
There are about 635 members of the Parliament, they are chosen every year by a simple majority in the correspondingly 635 constituency; each constituency has an identical number of inhabitants, and there must be held an election at least once every fifth year. By-elections are held in case a constituency’s candidate dies or of some reason resign from his post.

"not known " burde være "no known", og intet komma efter revolutions
