------------
Imagine you are watched all day. Everywhere there is telescreens that receives (false) news and transmits every move you make. It’s illegal to have your own thoughts, it’s a crime, and if you do that the thought police will make you disappear. You live in a society of dictatorship – you are a slave.

Winston Smith lives in this society. He lives in the ruins of London in Oceania where he got a one-room apartment in "Victory Mansions".
He is 39 years old – he believes. Actually he can’t remember what year he was born. But he had been born in 1944 or 1945. His hair is very fair, his face naturally sanguine, his skin rough by coarse soap and blunt razor blades.
He dislikes nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones. He thinks that it is always the women, and above all the young ones, who is the most bigoted adherents of the Party. But we also hear about a dark-haired girl he wants to kill after the two minutes hate, because she’s young a pretty and sexless, because he wants to go to bed with her – it is lust.
He works in the ministry of truth in the Records Department and is a party member, but he is not happy for it.Winston is a rebellion who feels that there is something wrong with the society and the dictatorship and he begins writing diary, which is a felony, it is thought crime. In his diary he writes his thoughts: “Down with Big Brother” (the leader-symbol of the party) and that he hates the party.
Maybe he had lived before BIGBROTHER and the ministries got the power: “he tried to squeeze out some childhood memory that should tell him whether London had always been quiet like this” That means that the society not always has been like it is now.

The world looks cold. London is a sad ruin with no colors except the posters that is plastered everywhere with Bigbrother on. There are telescreens everywhere, as in Winston’s living room, to control people and give false news. Helicopters and the Thougt police control everything.
The wind is whirling a swirl of gritty dust and turns papers into spirals.
In the hallway of Victory Mansions there’s a smell of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At the end of the hall there’s also a big poster of Bigbrother.

The party controls (also) the language through Newspeak, which is the old English that is being cut down. By controlling the language the party could control people’s mind and thoughts, because of limited use of words.
If you think in Newspeak it is harder to make thought crime, because it is the words, which forms your thoughts and if the number of different words is reduced enough, you aren’t able to form thoughts that can harm the party. In this way the party can avoid rebellions.
It is brainwash – propaganda. Many dictators had used propaganda fx. Hittler and his speeches about the Jews; Hitler used the frustration of the crack on Wall Street in 1929 and turned it into hatred towards the Jews.
Newspeak is a smart way to get the control of people and it can give control and then power.

The theme: a dystopian world where the human is a mindless robot.
