Hej engelskeksperter!
Mvh.

St Cecilia’s is an innovative high school that wants to be ahead of its time. The head teacher, Jeffrey Risbridger, can not see the point in having a new 21st century school and running it along 19th century lines. Therefore the high school aims to be in front within information technology.
Every one of the 11, 12 and 13-year-old pupils currently has their own laptop. They pick it up in the morning and use it during the day to school related things. When the last lesson finishes at 2.30 pm they have the possibility to stay in school and do their homework by using their own laptop. The pupils are after all not allowed to bring home their laptops at night. That is caused by the fact that 11-year-old school kids are easy offers for robbers in London.
There are both pros and cons connected to the use of laptops in the classes. First and foremost the pupils have the possibility to work with their exercises and do their homework on screen at school and file it electronically. In addition they are only a few clicks away from all the information on the internet. Beyond this the teachers have the opportunity to deliver documents to the students electronically. The students can then organize their documents and notes smart and easy which makes a good general view. It is also a big pro that the students have easy access to electronic school programs such as electronically dictionaries, math programs and economy programs.
It is not to be forgotten that there also are a lot of problems by using laptops in the Classes. The pupils do not have eye contact with their teacher and their classmates so often because they are so focused on the screen. Every pupil is in his/her own little world behind the screen which can cause bad group cohesiveness. Especially if a lot of the pupils use the laptop to non school related things in the lessons. Beyond this the laptops can easily disturb many pupils at once because the screen so easily catches the eye.
I think that all these things mean that especially the pupils who have much self-discipline have an advantage of having a laptop because they are able to use the laptop in a sensible way. But the pupils without self-discipline are better served by not having a laptop. All in all I think that the investment in computers is value for money because you have to look forward and prepare the students on a life where information technology is going to play a lot larger role than it is today. Remember that you can not stop the development and therefore you have to adjust instead of just standing still.
