In Londonderry in August 1969, a large group of young Catholics decided to throw stones against a Protestant demonstration; this was the beginning of three days with disturbances, called the battle of Bogside. There also had been conflicts in other cities as well and the English government had to bring the British army into action to avoid a civil war. At first, the British war was considered as the protectors of the Catholics, but after a short period many thought that it was making the Protestant be in power. It gave the IRA an opportunity to recruit more followers and after the establishment of the Provisional IRA, which supported the use of violence, there were many bloody conflicts. One of the most bloody was “Bloody Sunday” in 1972, where English soldiers killed 13 Catholics.

1: brug rocks i stedet.

2: en lidt mere præcis oversættelse.

There (also) had been conflicts in other cities as well, and the English government had to bring in the British army (into action) to avoid (a) civil war. At first(,) the British (war was) were (considered) looked upon as (the) protectors of the Catholics, but after a short period many people (thought that it was) came to believe they rather cemented  (making the) Protestant dominance.(be in power). It gave the IRA an opportunity to recruit more followers, and after the establishment of the Provisional IRA, which supported (eller: "favoured") the use of violence, there were many bloody conflicts(.
