English as a subject in Denmark
Hi,
Dan here. I'm an american student and wonder how you guys learn English as a subject at school. So I'm in 9th grade now. Dunno what the equivalent is in your county but it would be around aged 16. Do you read English literature like To kill a mocking bird or Shakespeare at school? Do you need to write eassys in English? If so, what would they be about and how will you write them? Thx.

Being in the ninth form equals -more or less- preparing to go to "high school" (called "Gymnasium" here).
Yes people do write English essays and yes, in our "gymnasium" we do read well-known works of English literature, both prose and poetry. Please note that "To Kill a Mocking Bird" is American, not English, and it deals with specifically American problems and prejudices, -still relevant, alas..
How does one learn to swim? -well, by swimming of course.
People learn English by speaking English in debate forums (e.g. in class) and by listening to and watching English films and English TV-series and, of course, doing a good deal of translation work as well as grammar, spelling exercises and pronunciation training. Last but not least, getting familiar with English idioms and collocations is an important part of the time spent during an English lesson.
Naturally it is of overall importance to have a good, sociable, and truly knowledgeable teacher.
