Rendezvous-Daniel Ransom

     The short story”Rendezvous” is written by Daniel Ransom in 1985. The story is split up in two. The one half of the story is about a girl called Kim, and the other one is a story about a man called Payton. The story takes place on the interstate in the United States of America (USA). The text is following both persons, Kim and Payton, at the same time. But the splitted story comes together in the end.
     The short story is told by a 3rd person unlimited narrator, because nobody says something during in the text, but we get to know what they think.  The narrator also has the ability to switch between Kim and Payton. The Story is told from the writer’s point of view, because it isn’t told from a one person perspective. Therefore we know that the narrator also is the writer.
      The title “Rendezvous” means a meeting between two persons. That is what even happens in the ending of Daniel Ransom’s story. The meeting is between Kim and Payton in the Interstate. Kim is a fifteen years old girl, who wants live her own life, without her parent’s interfering. She is just about to call her parents, before she changes her mind and starts walking by the Interstate, trying to stop a car by hitchhiking. Payton is driving at the Interstate and thinks back at a conversation, he had with a priest. He has a tattoo of a cobra, which itches a lot. “It´s as if it needs to be fed” (Page 53 line 6). That let me think about, that the conversation with the priest makes me also believe that he feeds the cobra by killing someone. Therefore I think there must be a connection between the tattoo and Payton. “The drums have died. A saxophone has replaced them. Drums give him energy, a high. Saxophones make him morose”. (Page 52 lines 6-7) That’s why I think there also must be a connection between him and the drums, he hears on his radio.
    The themes in the text are crime and running away from home. I think Payton is a boy, who likes to kill people and that Kim is just one of many, who will be killed by Payton. (Page 52 lines 20-22) “The priest wasn´t even sympathetic about him sending flowers and visiting the funeral home, which he´d done three out of five times after he´d gone out on the Interstate”.  In the U.S.A. we hear a lot of such stories from, for example, that a serial killer is running around on the street and is going to kill random people and young women’s because they rely on to killed.
    I think that there is a message in the short story. An example of a message could be, that you can’t trust all people. And that you had to watch out for yourself. But another important message is that you have to trust people who are close to you and that there is no reason to run away from home, because there almost is a solution.
      I don't think the story ends with this open ending: “She watches the car pull off the road fifty yards past her. Immediately she begins running. She wishes she´d been able to get a glimpse of the driver. All the other drivers she´d been able to check out before getting inside. But it´s dark and she´s soaked from the rain. For some reason she thinks of the pay phone. Of almost lifting up the receiver. Of almost making the call. She´s at the car now. Her slender hand at the door handle.  As she opens the door, she hears drums. Very load drums. (Page 53 lines 14-28), because you don't know what happens to Kim. Therefor I think there must be another ending. I believe that Kim jump into the car and drive away with Payton. And then he kills her.  I don’t know how he’ll kill her, but I think Payton drives away to a deserted place and kill her.
       I think it is a good story and that it’s very exciting. When I read it the first time I couldn’t understand the meaning with the splitted story, but after I had read it twice I understand it and get the meaning of it. And the open end made me think a lot about what happened with Kim, but I think she dies, so Payton can “feed” the cobra.
