Summary – Graduation Ball
The main character of the short story is 22 year-old Carrie Lerner, who has just gotten a job as a dancing-instructor in Newark, a city in the state of New Jersey. She has taken the job why she just graduated from College and needed the money. The purpose of the job is to teach black HIV infected fifteen- and sixteen-year-olds how to dance, a thing Carrie has not tried before. None of the students knows anything about dancing; only what they have seen in the movie Fame. This bothers Carrie, and therefore she tries to motivate, and gain control over the class, by quickly making up a dance that shows the aspect of black people. This seems to work.
Carrie is not used to consort with black people and therefore it is with mixed feelings when Andy, the music coordinator, holds her hand a night when Carrie goes for a walk. Because of her issue towards black people, Carrie becomes frightened by a black man who accosts her when walking on the street several years after the job in Newark.
