Jeg har en kort essay, men min computer er uden hjælpeprogrammer som stavekrontol og gramatikkontrol. Er der nogle stykker som vil hjælpe med at finde en masse fejl?
Queenie Buxton who is the main character, also have the function as the narrator. In the begining of the text we learn that Queenie is being childish or just is a adventurous person:
”I cried because I wanted to see more countries. Emily called me a little madam...”(l. 74-75)
This is the oppisite of her mother who has no interested in different countries:
“Mother was not interested in the different woods of Burma or the biggame trophies of Malaya” (l. 48-49).
In the begining of the novel, we see that Queenie is a ignorant person. She didnt know that Africa was a country: “I’d thought I’d been to Africa…” Later on Early Bird, Queenie's teacher, informed the class that Africa was a country (l. 1-4). It shows the reader that they both are ignorant because it's a well-known fact that Africa is a continent.
When Queenie for the first time sees a the African man she get's surprised. He was dark as chocolate and looked like a monkey. Graham tries to convince Queenie to kiss the man, but then suddenly the African man teels her that he will offer a handshack. Queenie takes the offer and realizes that his hand are like touching everyone else’s hand. Know she understands that the only differences between black and white people is the colour.
The fact that Queenie hasn’t been in contact with a dark-black person before, gives us an idear that she all the time has been isolated from everyone who is an imigrant.
As told before, Queenie's father is Butcher who owns a farm. He has several persons working under him. It's easy to see that is's Queenie's parents who are in charge because of the class difference between the parrents and the farm staff. The staff don't have anything to say at all:
”I can't be bothered with a fancy name like that – I'll call you Jim” (l. 34)
It's is clear that The Queenie's father belives that he is alot more worth then. He dosent want his staff to think they are anything worth. Queenie's father gave instructions to Emily and Graham twice when they was with Queenie in the park. Her father does not have very much confidence in Graham (l. 76).
Emily and Graham is clearly interested or in love with each other. We dont know if they are dating or married for that mader of sake. They are both quite poor and they represent the lower class role.
One of the big themes is prejudice. Many times we read that the black immigrants who“only understand drums.” (l. 91). Eventhough most of the black persons only understand drums it's easy to se that their is a huge prejudice behind the comment. Language is for everybody. Everyone have language so they can communicate with each other. So by saying that a black person cannot speak just because of their race is a wrong opinion. But if Queenie is as ignorant as shown, she might believe that black persons only understand drums.
It is a scary thought that just because of your ignorance you can become racist and thereby ruin the harmony that should be between black and whit.
In the end of the story says the fathers wise to Queenie:
“See here, Queenie. Look around. You’ve got the whole world at your feet, lass.” (. 136-137)
This quote could mean that since you are white, you have the whole world at your feet. You are on top of the world and can do whatever you want to do. The only one who have limits is the immigrants who never will be civilzed. Another way of seing the quote is if it's an advice to Queenie. He gives her the oppitunity to get the best ways and try to approach some goals in her life.
