Republic of Ireland vs the United Kingdom
”Essay”
There are troubles between different countries all over the world – there have always been, and there will always be. Imperialism is a good example to show how some countries are being repressed by other countries. Some country’s Do not have enough solidarity and and its people are divided. The cause of this may stem from many reasons. A countrys weakness - for example different religious or political views between the citizens - could make an easy opening for another country to go in and take the military, political or economical control, and that is what we call imperialism. Likewise imperialism, war is a big problem all over the world too. We are speaking of two kinds of wars. It can be between two countries or within a country’s own people – what we term as a civil war.
In this essay I am going to compare three different narrators’ views on the troubles between England and Ireland. The troubles in these texts were mainly caused by Easter Rising. Easter Rising was delayed to Easter Monday. It was the day where the Free Staters were to rise against the British government. The Volunteers, lead by Padraic Pearse and the I.C.A. lead by, James Connolly banded together and marched out to bring their message.
In the text ”Women in the fight” the troubles between the English and the catholic Irish is expressed by a women - Constance Markievicz. She says:
”If we failed to win, so did the English. They slaughtered and imprisoned, only to arouse the nation to a passion of love and loyalty, loyalty to Ireland and hatred of foreign rule.”
page 73 line14-17
According to her England still ruled Ireland and that once the nation saw that it was just a new personnel of traitors with new uniforms the Irish would finish the work begun by women and
men that Easter Monday.
The text “The Execution of James Connolly in Kalmainham” was told by Nora Connolly, daughter of the I.C.A. leader. James Connolly was executed bacause he was one of leaders of the Easter Rising. The English ruled Ireland, and the Free Staters who tried to get an independent nation were senteced to death because they failed under Easter Rising. If the people of Ireland had stuck together under the Easter Rising they might have had a change to win. However, the Free Staters were ostracized until after the Rising – here they became ”national” heroes.
The text ”The Sniper” written by Liam O'Flaherty tells us how terrible war can be. A young
sniper ends up shooting his own brother – it could be brother in arms or his real brother we do not know. But they were both Irish - just with two different opinions on how Ireland should be.
In all three stories you can see that Ireland was weakened because the nation was divided in two – the Free Staters and the Republican. The republicans supported the British and therefore Ireland was, and still is, in some way under British rule.
