Hej. er der nogen der gider læse min stil igennem for her på det sidste er det gået meget dårligt for mig så håber godt nok der er nogen der gider se den igennem.
The Whaler
This story takes place in an ordinary town and the boy in the story is very fascinated by whaling. And one day when he is out shopping for his mother he meets an old man that he thought was whaling, because some years ago the old man left the town and went out to become a whaler. But the old man never became a whaler. The boy meets the old man and he is very fascinated by him, but the old man says to the boy that he have never seen a whale and the boy do not understand how he can be a whaler when he have not seen a whale.
The old man is just a pathetic man who is mourning for his love to Eileen Early, who he had an affair with once. Mrs. Early is a teacher for the boy. “Thar she blows”1. The old man is saying that a few times in the short story and the boy thinks that it is the whales he is talking about but it is Mrs. Early. He is keeping a secret that he is telling the boy about. “I never saw a whale in my life”2. When he travelled out to become a whaler but he never did and now he has returned to his home town. Maybe because he wants Mrs. Early, now that he husband have past away. “
The narrator is a boy who looks up to whalers and his meeting with the old man is very new and exciting for him. But, as I have mentioned before, the whaler says that he have never seen a whale. ““You never saw a whale”, I repeated more to myself than to him”3. And I think that the boy realizes that his hero and the person that he have looked up to in all this years is not who he think he really is. “”I never saw a whale in my life.” He broke the silence. Involuntarily I turned to stare at him in the shock of disbelief. Never saw a whale. The hero of my lonely stories. The harpoonist of my wild imaginings”4. It is like his whole world is falling apart when the man admits that he never became a whaler. “The hero of my lonely stories”. It sounds like he is very alone and his stories about whaling and the Whaler means a lot to him.
A month after the meeting, the old man hanged himself. I think it is because he never became a whaler and the love of his life do not want him or he is too afraid to confide his love to her. And the boy is standing on the hill, I think, and he cans see Eileen Early coming out of her house. And the last linie is: “Thar she blows”5. That is when he finds out that she is the one the old man was talking about when he said there she blows.
The theme of this story is the imaginative world and the real world. When the boy realizes that his hero is not what he imagined and that is his first step in to the real world. That the imaginative world is not like the real world at all.
