The narrator of The Great Gatsby is Nick Carraway. The first impression of Nick is that he thinks very highly of himself. ”I’m inclined to reserve all judgements” Nick has recently made his fortune in the bond business and therefore represents “new money”. Nick Carraway lives in a house on a part of Long Island called West Egg and is next-door neighbour with Jay Gatsby. Unlike Nicks West Egg neighbours Nick comes from a good family, has a fine education and has many connections on East Egg (The part of Long Island where the conservative aristocratic people live) Nick is very reserved and has a quiet and reflective personality.
Nick is cousin to Daisy, who Gatsby is in love with. Because of his individual bond to these to characters Nick plays an important role in the relati0onship between Gatsby and Daisy. According to himself he is tolerant, open-minded, and quiet and therefore people tend to tell him their secrets. “I was privy to secret griefs of wild, unknown men. “In spite the fact, according to Nick, that these secrets are unsought to him. Nick finds that he indeed has a great moral and even though he says that he does not judge people he is both discussed and fascinated by the grotesque lifestyle of the other characters. He is especially fascinated by the ostensible love between Gatsby and Daisy. Throughout the novel Nick owns a desire to love is symbolised by the relationship between Nick and the east egg girl called Jordan baker. Nevertheless Nick does not ever seem to experience these strong emotions. Also his great moral is shattered by the company of the other characters. This is as an example shown in chapter two where Nick mentions that he has only been drunken ones, but at a wild party with Tom Buchannan and his mistress he is once again under the influence of alcohol. Even though nick is the narrator of the novel he often just plays a quiet secondary role, preferring to describe and comment on events rather than dominate the action.
A main theme in this novel is the social differences between east egg (old money) and west egg (new money) and there attempts to pursuit happiness.
Gatsby and Nick represent “new money” and are therefore despised by the aristocratic East Eggers. Jay Gatsby is amassed by status and has a great desire to become a part of the east eggers. His background to him is humiliating and many episodes indicate that his fortune might be illegal. As an example the incident where Gatsby offers Nick another job on the side “... you might pick up a nice bit of money. It happens to be a rather confidential sort of thing. “ As a bootlegger it is a very bad idea to draw any attention in your way, but Gatsby thinks otherwise. He is with his enormous parties making others very much aware of him which indicates his obsession with status of power. Gatsby used to be very poor and his actions show an attempt to distinguish himself from his former self. This is represented by all his belongings which display nostalgia for the lifestyle of a British aristocrat. In his attempts to achieve wealth and luxury Gatsby has made Daisy the essence of everything he wants to achieve. The reason why Gatsby finds Daisy so alluring is perhaps because she is able to take her position for granted.
Gatsby seems to have idealized Daisy in his mind to the extent that the real Daisy, charming as she is, will almost certainly fail to live up to his expectations. Towards daisy all of his responses seem genuine. He is no longer a world man but an awkward schoolboy who can not hide his indisputable emotions. He forgets to play the role of the highly-educated man who comes from a fine family. Instead he is replaced with a revealing man in love. Gatsby is trying to re-create the past and is unable to move beyond it: “after she was free (from tom), they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house- just as if it were five years ago” Gatsby believes that his new-gained wealth will make Daisy his wife. This means that Gatsby is blinding himself to the reality that Daisy would never desert her own class and background to be with him. This shows a man who is so obsessed of the thought of the “old” daisy that he is building his life in order to impress her
