In 1946 Churchill said these words about Europe” … an iron curtain has descended across the Continent”. This separation of Europe was mainly because of the differences between the two great superpowers: The United States of America and the Soviet Union. The relationship between these two countries has always been of great interest to me, and that is one of the reasons why I have chosen to write about McCarthyism. In this assignment I have accounted for the political development in the US after WWII. I have explained the term “McCarthyism”, and found out that it is a term used about the witch-hunts after communists in the US after WWII, and that the term is named after Senator Joseph McCarthy, who led these witch-hunts. After that I have analyzed two of McCarthy’s speeches, to figure out his methods. I have read and analyzed a play called The Crucible, and have found out, that it is an allegory to McCarthyism. In the end of this assignment, I have discussed if there are still witch-hunts, similar to the ones throughout the McCarthy-time, in the US today, and have come to the conclusion, that Muslims, by some Americans, are treated as the communist were treated back in the 50’s and 40’s.
