It is only Peeping Tom, who can claim to have seen Lady Govia ride naked trough Coventrys streets. The story was really known a hundred years after Lady Godiva’s death in 1907. It’s like the idea of the pious beauty who rode naked trough the city has “spøgt” in the English “imagination” since.
Since it’s so long time ago, It’s difficult to know, what Lady Godiva really did, to her name could be remembered for more than 900 years. Lady Godiva was married to Earl Leofric, and she was hired both for being wise, religious and charitable. Leofric was not that popular among the people like his wife was, because he was not sharing her piousness or her charitable. When he needed big sums of money, he taxed the population in Coventry heavily.
