Magic

After I've been reading the short story ''Magic'', I found out, that it deals with a couple of messages. Through the essay I'll analyse some of the most important problems and messages. It's an American autobiographical story from a Jewish lady. I think, the reason why she had written this story is, that there is allot of different cultures and religions in the US. It's like a big pot with all kinds of flavours.
The main character of the essay is a young Jewish girl. I think, she's about 10 years old. The only thing she wish is to celebrate Christmas, but because of her religion she's not able to celebrate it. I think her mother and father belive more in the Jewish religion, then their daughter does. As demonstrated by the following quotation: p.28, ll.39-48:''Remember, this is not our holiday.'' ''What's our holiday?'' ''Hanukkah.'' '' Why can't we have Christmas, too? Everybody else does.'' Her mother is very strong in her faith, and she keeps telling her daughter that, it's not her holiday and that they don't celebrate Christmas. The daughter keeps making questions, and she can't understand why they can't celebrate Christmas just like everyone else? It's a very hard position a young girl in that age is in. It's hard for her that she is different from the rest of her friends. Her good friend, Marie, and Marie's mother and father, Mrs. and Mr. Piscatelli are the perfect nuclear family. I think the main character loves spending time with the family as demonstrated by the following quotation. P. 27, ll.10-17: ''These were confusing evenings-irresistible, because the Christmas decorations were so delicate and baroque, so unlike anything at home. There were clear class baubles with snowy religious scenes inside; gilt decorations as pointed as needles at both ends; silver ornaments dusted with white frosting like the sugared dates set out for us on the Christmas china. It was so humiliating, too, because none of these things were mine.'' The way she describes it, it's like she never has seen Christmas decorations before. She is desperately to celebrate Christmas, and not Hanukkah. She notice every little detail at the Piscatelli's. But of cause she is interested in how a Christian Christmas takes place, she has only tried to celebrate Hanukkah. I think her parents have tolde her to be a Jew, they haven't given her the choice to choose. I think she would had chosen the Christian religion, because every time she talks about Christmas it's positiv and when it's Hanukkah it's negative. She maybe thinks it's humiliating not to have all the things her best friend Marie has got in connection with Christmas. She is envious of Marie celebrating Christmas, and I think she is embarrassed of being different, and not have the opportunity to join the talk about Christmas in school.
When the main charter of the short story gets ill, her mother starts being nice to her all the time. You can see that by the following quotation: p 29, ll. 93-95. '' My mother was not a playful woman; we'd never played games together, and I wouldn't have know how to start, even if I had wanted to. This quotation gives my that impression of the mother, that either is she realy happy, that her daughter is ill, and not has the opportunity to spend Christmas, or else is she so sad and tries to cheer her Daughter up, because she's not able to spend Christmas at Piscatellis'.
I choose to think, that the mother is sad, and only want the best for her daughter, so I think, that's the reason why her parents bought the red sled to her for Christmas. When the main character dreams, her parents are ghosts, she sees them disappear. I think, it's a thought she' s been thinking in the Christmas time. It would have been nice if they disappeared for a month, so she could be able to celebrate Christmas, as everybody else. That's why the short story is called ''Magic''. At Christmas time, it has been told that magic takes place. On Christmas Eve all your wishes will come true, if you been a good girl/boy. And the main character's wish come true. She wanted her parents to give her the red sled on Christmas morning.
On of the biggest themes in this short story is religion. The Jewish family are strong believers, and the parents are not willing, to celebrate Christmas. I think they should go half and half, and just celebrate some of the Christmas. I think it's important to have
