Democracy, from Greek dimokratía, in turn derived from dêmos and krátos. Dêmos called in English 'people' and krátos called in English 'govern', and the phrase means 'people's power' or 'power to the people'. The two core principles of democracy are equality and freedom. All citizens are equal to the law and have equal access to power. In older days, most countries were governed by a single ruler, e.g. a king or emperor. Countries with only one king are known as absolute monarchy. For example a land which Denmark, Denmark was ruled by a king from 1660, and absolute monarchy was abolished in Denmark in 1848, and from 1848 for now becomes Denmark is ruled by democracy, but it is still a queen in Denmark but she has not power over Denmark just like kings from 1660 to 1848. Today there are 123 countries that are democratic. There are different forms for democracy. An other of they forms is parliamentary democracy, parliamentary democracy means in a government are there a president, who president is both state head and head of government, and is elected and the people who has voted on him/her. A third of they forms is liberal democracy. Liberal democracy is it form for democracy in it 21. Century.
During the cold war, liberal democracies were respected, as respond to the communists peoples-republics. Today the United States of America is governed by a president, it's called a republic. Democracy was first time used by the Greeks, 400 BC. The ones who had permission to participate were the Athenians citizens over the age of 20 years, that wasn't slaves, women or foreign nationals. If a man was over 30 years, he could be elected as a official or a juror. Athenians democracy was developed in the Greek city-state Athens, Athens was one of the first known democracies. The biggest and longest lasting democratic leader was Perikles.
