Markering af grammtiske fejl
Hey.

You Let Go of Him
An analysis of the short story “You Let Go of him”
Can a father be jealous of his own son? In Clara Wigfall’s short story “You Let Go of Him” is one the main characters a very green-eyed father. This father, named Oskar, is not just envious of his son, but also of his son’s role model named Vihelam.
Oskar, his wife Margaret and their 6-year-old son Jonas are in a cabin by a lake during the summertime. The land, that the cabin is built on, was a present from Margaret’s parents. The family is on holiday, they are staying in this cottage and they spend their days relaxing and fishing in the lake by the cabin.
The family’s neighbors are called Vihelam and Bjorn. Vihelam is, in the eyes of Jonas, a cool and adventurous guy, because he sails wildly around in the lake and makes wild turns that create big waves. Vihelam is presented as a laid-back, cool and fun guy, but some of the people, with houses by the lake, are tired of the wild way Vihelam is sailing and this makes him seem as a bully. At the same time is the name Vihelam really close to the word villain, so the writer must have wanted the readers to think of a villain when reading about Vihelam.
The fact that Jonas looks up to Vihelam makes the father Jealous, but Oskar isn’t in a position to make Jonas look up to him by doing anything wild, and especially not with Jonas. The reason to this is Margaret; she is a very protective mother, while Oskar is a more relaxed parent. This is made clear already on the first page, when Margaret keeps checking in on Jonas: “(…) she kept looking in on him every few minutes to listen to his breathing.” And at one point, this constant checking becomes too much for Oskar and he say: “Leave it. He’s all right.” It this constant attention from the mother to Jonas, that makes Oskar jealous of his on son, and at the same time is the father jealous of Vihelam because Jonas looks up to him, and thinks he’s cool.
So to conclude, this short story has two domestic triangles, one with the father being jealous of the mother’s attention to Jonas, and one where the father is jealous of Vihelam because of the way Jonas looks up to Vihelam.
This jealousy makes Oskar do something very stupid. Oskar takes Jonas out for a boat ride so they can catch fish, but they don’t have any luck and can’t catch anything. So Oskar wants to go home, but Jonas who wants to stay, gets disappointed and ends up saying: “(…) you never do anything fun like the man in the white boat. You never spin or anything.” This makes the father extremely jealous and angry, and he can’t blame Jonas for thinking that Vihelam is cool, as a result Oskar decides to do some spins with the boat, but it goes wrong and the boat capsizes. Vihelam, who in the beginning is presented as a hero, saves Oskar and Jonas from drowning. Oskar tries to cover up the accident by lying about how the it happened, but Vihelam saw it and tells Margaret what Oskar did with the boat, and how Oskar saved himself and abandoned Jonas. Vihelam tells this, even though Oskar is ashamed and tries to stop it.
Oskar is judging from this episode a liar, an irresponsible parent and a sad jealous man. Oskar doesn’t seem as a good parent, and he drinks heavily. Oskar is also an immature man, this is shown when him, Vihelam, Bjorn and Margaret plays a board game, and Oskar is winning and can’t contain himself so he starts to make fun of Vihelam when he loses or makes mistakes.
The relationship between Oksar and Margaret is in a crisis. One of the ways that this is indicated is by their different parenting styles. Oskar is a relaxed parent who wants to be friends with Jonas, and Margaret is overprotective and afraid of anything happening to Jonas. This creates some conflicts between Margaret and Oskar. At once on the first page in this short story is it clear that the relationship is in a bad place: “She had spend her childhood summers by the lake with her mother and her siblings, her father coming out as often as he could. She had hoped that it would be the same for her and Oskar. Until this evening, she had been confident that it would.” In this we get a good impression of what kind of relationship they have. Margaret is not happy with their life and she is not satisfied with the person Oskar is. From the quote it is possible to conclude, not only that their relationship isn’t good, but also that it recently had been worsened. On the other hand Oskar doesn’t seem like he has a problem with the relationship and he is ignorant towards how Margaret feel, this is seen from this quote: “Oskar shuffled showily, unaware of his wife’s look if contempt”. So there is no doubt that the relationship is bad, but the question is if, the accident with the boat and Oskar’s irresponsible behavior is going to be the end of the relationship between Margaret and Oskar. There is no way for the reader to know this, because “You Let Go of Him” has an open ending.
The themes in “You Let Go of Him” is on a large scale demonstrated through Oskar, he is jealous, irresponsible and a liar. So therefore one of the themes are Jealousy because Oskar is jealous of his son, and his son’s role model, irresponsibility because Oskar is an irresponsible father and lies because Oskar is a liar and lies about what happened in the boat. Competition and love triangles can also be seen as themes, but it is rather ways to show the real or more important themes.
The incident with the boat turning explains the title of “You Let Go of Him”, because after Vihelam has explained what really happened to Margaret, the overprotecting and reproachful mother, she looks over at Oskar and says: “You let go of him.” . She says this, because when the boat capsized Oskar didn’t hold on to Jonas.
To conclude this short story has two love triangles. The relationship between Oskar and Margaret is terrible, and probably getting worse if not ending. “You Let Go of Him” has three to five themes depending on the individual readers opinion and they are illustrated trough Oskar’s personality.
