After having read only three of Raymond Carver’s short stories I allow myself to say that “They’re Not Your Husband” does not seem quite as difficult to interpret as his other stories.

Because even though Carver’s stories deal with average people living average lives they are absolutely filled with hidden remarks.

Earl does not want to be considered a joker so he decides that his next sales talk should be aimed at his wife.

He has some kind of obscure idea that his wife is a reflection of himself and only by getting her to look better he might start to feel better.

It is as if he admits he has tried to lose many times before, like it is normal for him to be a loser.

Earl is so egocentric that Doreen’s colleagues and everybody else could go to hell as long as Doreen keeps loosing weight in order for him to get his own lewd satisfaction.

But in the end when Earl visits the coffee shop he wants to hold his own by getting other people to tell him how sexy and thin his wife is.

However, a diet is not always a bad idea. It is well known that the probability of getting hearth- and circulation diseases as well as diabetes is higher for thick people.

But at the end when Earl visits the coffee shop he wants "to hold his own"
