Håber på nogle dejlige hurtige svare :)
You are sitting in your own thoughts and suddenly you get a flashback. You remember things that happened for years ago, but it is not only things but whole episodes. In the short story “A Journey” written by Colm Toibin (2006), we are reading about a mother getting flashback, of her now 20 years old son, about his childhood. Flashbacks can be connected to lots of moments. In the short story we want to see some of the exemplas. Can silence provoke flashbacks?
The short story “A Journey” starts whit a quite long flashback. It is the mother who’s getting it. Her son David asked, as he was 4 years old, how people die. The first flashback is used as an “appetizer” to the short story. The appetizer get the reader to pay attention, and you want to read more than just the first flashback. The mother has in the text retrieved her 20 years old son, and in the car there is a terrible silence, so the mother’s thoughts are going they own way.
“When she was a little girl she loved working in the shop.” The mother is not only thinking of her son when they are driving. Her thoughts go far around every simple subject. And the silence in the car is killing her.
In this short story are there no doubt, the mother’s thoughts are started because of her sons silence. She is thinking about his childhood and why he is grown up to the man he is now. She connected to her own childhood to see if there is an explanation. But there is not. The silence had provoked those flashbacks and she could not stop her thoughts.
