Mario Gianluigi Puzo (October 15, 1920 – July 2, 1999) was an American author and screenwriter, most known for his novels about the Mafia including The Godfather, which is the most well - known publishing he has ever made. The Godfather was published in 1969 later co-adapted into a film by Francis Ford Coppola in 1972 as the first part, then in 1974 the second and in 1980 the third part.

The book is about the whole mafia world in New York also known as Little Italy. Don Vito Corleone is Godfather of one of the richest families in New York. His business of being a gangster is fear and murder.  The book starts with Corleone’s youngest son Michael, which has returned from the Second World War just in time to see the weeding of Connie Corleone (Michael’s sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michael’s family is involved with the Mafia except him self. Cause the only thing Michael wants is a quiet life away from the family business. The drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo known as Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He meets unexpected up to the weeding and approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don’s lawyer Tom Hagen, he repel the offer, because he’s morally against the business of drugs. This does not please Sollozzo, and so far he has Don Corleone shot down by some of his hit men. Don Corleone barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and the rest of the five Mafia Families in New York.

The book’s protagonist is Michael Corleone later known as The Godfather. He’s the youngest son of Don Vito Corleone and the youngest brother of Sonny and Fredo, and the older brother of Connie. First he’s married with a beautiful young woman named Apollonia. But unfortunately she is killed by a car bomb intended for Michael, planted by a corrupt bodyguard. Later he marries a woman called Kay, whom he in the start of the book has acquaintance with. Within two years, they have two children, Anthony and Mary. Michael always wanted a quiet life away from his father and brothers business. But after all Michael changes into one of the most dangerous gangster of them all.
The book takes place in the end of The Second Wold War and up to the fifties. They live in an upper class and gangster environment, and the family is on of the richest in New York.

The themes of the book are family, respect, violence and tradition. I also think that The Godfather relates to all stories of immigrant families who are trying, over the course of generations, to fit into the mainstream of American life. The genres are drama and crime.
The version I’m reading of The Godfather publishing company is Penguin Readers.  It’s a short version of the first book, which publishing company is G. P. Putnam’s Sons.
I believe that The Godfather is one of the most classic books ever made. The movies are also some of the most seen by young and adult. I personally think it is a very good book and explains from the gangster environments view how the real world is when your living with Godfathers. I would recommend reading The God Father at any time. It’s truly one of the best books I ever read and I know I’m not the only one with that opinion.
