American History X

1. Why does Derek become a Nazi?
Derek becomes Nazi because of his father. His father was a Nazi, and in a flashback in the film we see how the father praises Derek when he does anything Nazi. As the father then dies, will follow his father Derek’s footsteps and continue to make the father proud.
Which significance does his upbringing and this father have?
Derek’s father says lot with some racial attitudes towards black people. Derek does not seem that these statements affect him much, until one day when his father is put of his job as a fireman and is killed by a black man. Derek change and become a person full of anger and hatred against black people.
What is attractive about the gang environment?
The groups have a great community. It has probably something to do that they will look up to each other, and think that they will be like them.

What does he experience in prison which leads to this recognition?
Derek finds out that Nazism is not a solution when he arrives in prison, and keeps a black inmate. When Derek learns the white Nazis to know, he also sees that they trade with the black people.
Which role does principal Sweenay play?
Rector Sweeney is a teacher at the school as Derek has gone on, and as Derek’s younger brother Danny is now going on. He has tried to help Derek, now he helps Danny.
Which role does his black inmate play?
His black friend in prison is his only friend. I guess that Derek realizes that blacks can also be sweet.
2. Which Nazi symbols do we see in the movie? We see: Racist Skinhead symbol and swastika tattoos
3. Why does Danny have to die in the end?
I think maybe to point out that just because a husband, Derek, is no longer Nazi. There is still Nazism. Perhaps also to show that no only ate the whites who must do something. The black can be just as nasty.
4. What is your opinion about the movie?
I think it’s a really good movie, but I also thought it was a little difficult to understand. I saw the movie twice before I started answering the questions, and the second time I saw the movie I understood more than the first time. But I think it’s really good. I’m sure that I get too see the movie again.

To begin with, Derek groups up with the other Nazis in the prison but he quikly learns that they are not as fanatic as him. They are trading with black people in the dark, which he cannot tolerate. However, the main reason for his transformations must be due to his black cell mate, whom he becomes friends with.
