Jeg skal i morgen aflevere dette korte referat af en dansk artikel. Det grammatiske er dog ikke ligefrem min stærke side, og jeg håber derfor at i vil kigge den igennem og kommentere på fejlene...?
Mvh Rasmus...!
Here it goes.... ;-)
The following text is a paraphrase of the article “Nuclear physics – The secret weapon” published in Politiken the third of august.
Any increase of knowledge and skill is linked to increased responsibility. With these words the ethical approach to physics in this article is introduced, as we dive into the public story of Niels Bohr, the Danish physicist whose work and worries has remained ever present. Being one of the few whose theoretical work sparked the nuclear arms race, his wisdom concerning the treatment of the nuclear bomb has become legendary.
Although his role in the late-war development of the bomb wasn’t overwhelming, he retained his high profile status within the scientific elite and consequently had a certain weight when preaching his vision of the post-war scientific climate. Debating his pioneering quantum mechanics-theory with Einstein and combining the best aspects of the European scientific traditions in his Nuclear-institute in Copenhagen was more than enough to ensure his reputation as perhaps the world’s most competent scientist in his respective field.
In the thirties the development within nuclear physic advanced quickly. Huge progress was made when Szilard in 1933 proved that splitting atoms was possible followed by an actual splitting in 1938 by Otto Hahn. In addition, Bohr pointed out the potential use of nuclear power as a military weapon, making his late-thirties Birmingham lecture the nuclear arms race starting signal.
Another rapidly growing movement was that of the totalitarian states in Europe. German Jews fled to USA and among them was considerable scientific resources, soon incorporated by the Americans in the effort to use nuclear power. Denmark was invaded by the Germans in the early forties leaving the half-Jew Bohr in a difficult situation. Records of meetings between Bohr and German nuclear scientists suggest that the integration of Bohr into a German nuclear bomb project failed although the details are unclear. When the situation worsened, however, he fled to London and learned that the Americans and English had formed an alliance to coordinate their progress and that his work in Denmark had isolated him from recent progress in the field of nuclear physics, accelerated by Germanys acquisition of the Czechs’ uranium ores.
Bohr was incorporated in the Manhattan Project immediately, although his strength lay within the over and done with theoretical part of the development. His effort then concentrated on promoting an open dialog in the post-war era, although his appearance in front of the conservative Churchill, weren’t of the communist-fearing and imperialistic statesman’s immediate interest.
Niels Bohr saw the A-bomb as a necessity, and reckoned that his scientific discoveries were irreversible. But his vision became nothing but a dream - the arms race had long been a fact.
