To begin with; is the text written in first person singularis, which gives the reader a good insight in what Sarah Palin thoughts are. Besides that is the situation about having a son joining the army a very relatable topic for many families. As Sarah writes “(…) the reason he serves starts with his family. He has a little sister a special little baby brother, and a nephew”. The things everyone cares about are their family and the world being a safe place for children. So Sarah is wise using such a sore topic, to engage the readers.
In addition, is the way she starts telling the story about her son making the topic even more personal and attentive. In that way it’s easily to identify and gain sympathy with Sarah.
Sarah is especially turning he attention against the American people: “But America isn’t just another country, (…) We are the only in the history of the world that was not founded on a particular territory or culture or people, but an idea. That idea is that all human beings have a God-given right to be free. – All that focus on America as a founded land of freedom makes the identification even bigger for the American reader.
