Hovard var tilsyneladende en succesrig mand, indtil han en dag gik til lægen for at bliev behandlet for hovedpine og blev forelsket i Elaine. det beskrives i novellen som kærlighed ved første blik. en af konsekvenserne af deres forhold er, at de begge mister deres arbejde. især den 38 årige Howard har svært ved at finde et nyt. en af de ting, som det i øvrigt kunne være værd at diskutere nærmere, er deres opfattelse af, hvordan omverdenen ser på deres forhold. kan man for eksempel med rimelighed betragte deres opførsel som illoyalitet mod deres første ægteskab?
