the relationship between carl and lily

The Order of Things
Anyone can fall in love, even those with spouses and children, who have a solid and structured weekday, can fall in love and feel like teenagers again. People of all ages may want to try something new, and break away from the daily life- but it is often associated with problems, especially because of the society and its unwritten rules. In the following I will try to touch on a variety of issues concerning the text The Order of Things written by Judy Troy. My essay will include a characterizing of Carl, an interpretation of, the setting, symbolism, the title and the relationship between Judy and Carl.
The story takes place in different hotels and motels, in church, in Carl's house and a single scene in a small stand of bleachers. It seems to me that we are in a normal environment, with spouses and their children in a small town with a church, however, I think it is a religious town, not only because Carl is an reverend but also because of the name of the softball team, where it is clearly stated that they are Lutherans "During the first inning of the Worland Lutheran Softball game (..)" (l. 1).
Carl is a reverend and the main character in the short story written by Judy Troy. Carl is in the early forties and lives in a small town called Worland together with his wife and daughter, who has two more years of high school. Even though he has a wife and a daughter with her, he has an affair with a married woman called Lily Forrest. Carl is fallen in love with Lily; he has never felt that way for anyone else, not even for his own wife. They even had plans to marry so swift his daughter has finished in High School, but this does not happen when she has an accident on the way home from a meeting with Carl. but why is a man unfaithful, which apparently has such a good life with a wife, child and good job? I think he's grown tired of the same boring life, he is feeling himself getting older, and wants to try something new and exciting. The flame between him and his wife may also burn out.
Carl and Lily was fallen in love like teenagers, as long as they were together they believed that everything else would just work itself out.  Carl had never been someone who touches another person easily, but with Lily it is something else. Lily gets him to open his eyes to nature, and he begins to notice how beautiful it is. He undergoes an important internal change, “(… ) Perhaps through her (…) he could love the world”. Carl had always believed in his father's words, "" Always be prepared for what's next "" (l.55). But now that he has met Lily he feels that the order of things is that the truth is to feel first and then think. Moreover, he lets himself be influenced by his faith. But in the end he decides Lily, and breaks all the rules you can in a society. I think that this is a sign that Lily makes him an independent thinking person who listen to himself and not to society’s rules.
The title has a cosmic sense for the story it. The order of things is summer turning into winter with spring and autumn as middle-stations. Autumn means growing old and leads to winter that means death, which evidently leads to spring or new life. Even though Lily dies she has been a turning point in Carl’s life and after winter comes spring symbolizing new life or rebirth in this case the “new life” of Carl’s, which has changed sufficiently enough to be called new life. Or it could be the rebirth of his love life, maybe with another woman with whom he can share love on a higher level because of his experience with Lily.
Carl seems like the subject of the narration due to the fact the narrator can go in and out of his internal thoughts. Everything is seen through his eyes, “Carl forced himself to say, although he couldn’t imagine getting back into his car…” (ll. 21-22). Overall we are dealing with a third person narrator who tells the story past tense, but the narrator is bound to the main character Carl.

Carl may feel that his life is starting to get boring; he does not cease to be the innocent pastor with a wife and a child. His life has become too similar, and he no longer follows an intense love for his wife. In addition, he can see that he is getting older, and he decides that it is now he must break the known limits and try something new and exciting. In the beginning Carl feels bad breaking society’s rules and the unwritten rules for being a reverend. Which suggests that he, after all, feels kind of ashamed about the unfaithfulness and thereby a greater devotion towards his religion? All in all the surroundings, such as the church and the town, have a great impact on their relationship. But at a point he decides that he no longer will live by society's rules. The title and symbols in the text alludes the way it goes for Carl and Lily maybe because they are breaking the rules? However I think Lily taught Carl a lot of things he maybe can use in “his next spring”.
