Engelsk essay - Smoking ban v.2

B - Comment on the use of exaggeration and irony in text 3. Illustrate your answer with quotations from the text.

The first thing I noticed in text two was the headline, “Another victory for Britain’s insufferable paternalists” it’s an extreme negative headline, and especially “insufferable paternalists” is a big exaggeration. This headline is the foundation of a text full of insults, irony and negative terms.

In the first paragraph Simon Jenkins describes how tough a decision it was for the MPs to decide weather they should ban smoking or not (l. 1-7). He uses a metaphor when he mentions, “it was the sound of MPs thinking for themselves”. It is a metaphor because there is no way it is possible to hear what other people are thinking. If you for some reason could hear them, I don’t think it would sound “whirring, clanking and gurgling” (l. 1).

Another exaggeration is when he claims that the MPs have restricted liberty and how the next step will be a police state with inspectors checking every house for smoke scent (l. 28-31). He thinks the government should make some exceptions’ instead of generalizing. An example could be bars and clubs (l. 25-27).

In the end he says “”If the people of Bangor want to shut their pubs on Sunday, why should I or Tony Blair want to stop them” (l. 53-55). This is a very strange sentence, because why should Blair matter about a pub in a small town in Wales[1]. I think he is trying to point out, how pointless the smoking ban is.

Towards the end he writes “[…] only because Britain is the world capital of insufferable paternalism” once again he exaggerates and to call Britain the capital of insufferable paternalism is almost a step off track, but it fits well in the article which is full of exaggerating’s and complicated terms.
