Throughout the short story deals with things as with crime and detection, which concerns the main character Richard, who is very fascinated about the sculpture in the Guggenheim Museum as illustrated in following quote:” It lay at his feet, more like a gigantic insect than the body of a woman. He was fascinated, yet he could scarcely bear to look. There was an arched backbone from which the ribs opened out like petals to the sun.” (Page 11 – line 3) Moreover Richard meets the girl Jessica, who as firsthand seems like being a normal girl. Richard sees Jessica as a good and considered girl, for instance the detail that Jessica wears a fitted jacket in tan suede. Richard talks with Jessica and at the moment she left him, he tries to discover her again, because Jessica inspires him. Richard was so fascinated, so he followed her and she told Richard about her interest. Jessica seems like a special girl, which is described in following quote:” I’m interesting in the way women were silenced by surrealist” (Page 14 – line 15) Later on Jessica talks about the fascinating sculpture “Woman with her Throat Cut” and she says that it has a good meaning for silencing someone. Owing to the newspaper Jessica tells Richard about a murder with a cheese-cutter. Richard doesn’t feel good about the situation, and when he looks at Jessica, her face was the owl-head of the bride in Max Ernst picture. Owl is a symbol of wisdom as well as dark actions. The owl could be a symbol of how Richard feels about Jessica.
The text contains several symbols that emphasize the genre, for instance the moment when Richard sees Jessica as an owl. The owl is also a symbol in which the title is reflected. The connection between the symbol and the title is a symbol of how Richard thinks. It’s like Jessica has to personality and Richard thinks she is a good girl, so immediately he would not se her as a criminal. That is why the title “Don’t You Hate Having Two Heads?” in reflected in Jessica’s personality.
When Richard went home, he was confused, which is exemplified here:” He couldn’t rid himself of the fear that Jessica was cruising the hotels of San Polo looking for him.” (Page 17 Line 23) At the moment when Richard talks to his wife, the postcard with “The Women with her Throat Cut” by Alberto Giacometti was placed in Richards’s wife’s hand. Richard realizes that he had swapped bag with Jessica in the restaurant. After which a gleaming, tightly coiled length of cheese-wire landed in front of Richard and his wife. It was then not so peculiar that Jessica was so mysterious and fascinated by the way that, women are silencing of surrealism.
