Tænkte om jeg kunne få dig til at skimme min engelsk essay hurtigt igennem? - skal afleveres i dag. Ved godt tiden er knap, men sådan blev det lige i dag :)

“It pays to give your staff a life” deals with flexibility at the workplace. Flexibility meaning, that workers can have influence on when and how often they have to work. Many companies see the pros of workplace flexibility today. Their employees are allowed to do a lot more, for instance home-working and part-time working. This opens up possibilities to both the employees and the employer and these will be evaluated in the following.

Workers can pick up their kids from school and other institutions and avoid the rush hour in the morning and still do their daily job. Carol Savage has made a research with 1000 executive women. She concluded that it not only was women with kids who were looking for a less rigid approach to office hours, but also young singles who would like to pursue their outside interests. Carol Savage has made a similar research with 1000 men, and it turned out almost the same way. The males too longed secretly to work variable hours and from home. The mentality among workers is much more different today, than some years ago. Many workers have got a better environment at their workplace, but also in their respective homes. It gives much more space, when you do not have to be at an office the whole day. Besides it is a fact that there is a reduction in the absenteeism and stress. These days stress is a very well-known issue in the world, especially within the working industry, and the imp!
ortance of prevention becomes essential to companies. Yet another advantage is the reduction of office costs provided that employees choose to work frequently from home. Electricity, heat and even space are areas on which a company can save both money and resources without decreasing the employees’ possibilities and options of doing a great job.

In many cases the companies are achieving better results, often clearly showed in their yearly turnovers. But if you ask the workers, it is probably not the yearly turnover nor the increased productivity, but the environment among colleagues they are proud of. It is excellent for the company to have a high turnover, which increases their competitiveness.
In many cases, the companies that have permanent rules for the employees which do not allow things like working at home, will be viewing enviously at the benefits the other more modern companies have got.

When a person like Carol Savage shows a result like the one described in the text, it is a led down that many companies choose not to loosen up the rules they preach so heavy-handedly. A con would probably be some extra costs for the employer, if the employers allow their workers to work at home. They might have to buy portables computers, which also are great for people that work some of the time at home and the rest at the office, so they can commute whilst doing their job. In most cases it would be lucrative for both partners and a sure win-win situation.

I believe that it is definitely in the interest of many employees to gain more control over the number of working hours and how they are structured. The keyword is time and more time for the family is especially a commendable advantage for a lot of people. For the employers it is a matter of controlling their workforce. If they can do that, while giving them adaptable rules, it would be a definite success and a match made in heaven. I think it is fair to say the advantages overshadow the disadvantages by far, which also might explain the growing success of Carol Savage’s company.
