Kortlægningen af den menneskelige arvemasse er det største forskningsprojekt i menneskehedens historie. I dag regner optimistiske forskere med, at det i løbet af 15 år vil lykkes dem at lave et komplet kort over rækkefølgen af arvemassens mere end tre milliarder byggesten fordelt på 23 par kromosomer.
Op gennem hele århundredet har amerikanerne ubestridt ført an i den genetiske forskning. Og det var da også amerikanske forskere, der i 1985 grundlagde det såkaldte HUGO-projekt (Human Genome Organization), der siden 1988 har opereret som en slags mindre FN for udforskningen af menneskets arvemasse, så dobbeltarbejde og uheldig konkurrence kunne undgås. Amerikanerne har gennem patentkrav på gen-sekvenser søgt at sikre, at de får nogle af de mange penge, de har invisteret, tilbage. Det protesterer andre deltagere i HUGO-projektet naturligvis imod. Mennesktes genetiske arvegods skal ikke patenteres, siges der.
HUGO-projektet ventes bl.a. at indvarsle en ny epoke indenfor den medicinske forskning. Genterapi opfattes af mange som et genialt lægemiddel – en fremtidig bahandlingsform af kræft, AIDS og en række alvorlige, alvorlige sygdomme. Men metoden, hvor raske gener erstattes af syge, indebærer et etisk dilemma: Skal vi gå i gang med at helbrede – med risiko for en udvikling, der kan ende med manipulation af menneskets arveanlæg? For de mere skeptiske virker genterapi som en ukonkret og ustyrlig behandlingsform, hvor selv eksperter ikke kan oversku konsekvenserne. Det kan godt være at genterapiens første skridt skal være at helbrede, men hvad bliver det næste – genterapi på kønsceller eller befrugtede æg for at få smukkere eller mere intelligente børn?

It might be that the first step of gene-therapy is to cure, but what will the next be - gene-therapy on gametes or firtilized eggs in order to get more beautiful or more intelligent children.
