Tom tit tot

This fairytale is about a mother and her daughter, where the mother in an accident, tells the king, that her daughter can spin five skeins at one day, which is a big lie, because the daughter doesn’t even know how to spin. The king is very impressed, and said that he wants to marry the daughter, and that she in the first eleven moths they are together shall have everything she wants, but then in the last month she has to spin five skeins every day, because I f she doesn’t, he will kill her. The king and the daughter were married and the daughter gets what ever she wants. But In the last month she has to spin, and she can’t. But then she meets a little black thing with a long tail, and he says he can spin all the skeins for her every day, but to make a deal, he will give her three guesses every night to guess his name, and if she cant before the month ends up, she shall marriage him, and she says ok. But of course she can’t guess his name, until the last day, where the king unknown about what is going on, tells the daughter the little black things name. And so in her last guess she guess its name, and that’s the end of the story.

1) First of all a lot of different things happen, because already from the beginning, the daughter has to complete different kinds of challenges, which actually catch the reader’s attention almost from the beginning, and you have to keep an eye on the story, because you want to know what will happen to the daughter, will she make it? That’s the question you ask your self, and that’s why you keep on reading. Besides that the action in the story is very magical, which many people see as an important part of a real fairytale. However you like it or not.

2) We think this fairytale fit best for kids, because it’s not that scary at all, but at the same time we think it would be exiting for kids, and sure they would appreciate if they got it read aloud in the right atmosphere, because it’s very useful to do that. But for older readers, we think they would find it a bit boring, because the action in the fairytale is a bit crude, unless you really love fairytales.

3) The daughter is absolute the main character. She is pretty young, and she looks like to be very unconcerned about her situation, because she always just bets on, that the problems will be solved without doing anything, which they don’t. And that’s also the reason why she always gets in to problems.
According to the mother, we also think you get a feeling of that she is also unconcerned, especially about her daughter, as she said yes to the king, about his offer. And when the daughter needed help in her distress to spin all these skeins, the mother was not helping. So you can call the mother a bit self centered, but at the same time you can call her generous, because if it wasn’t for her, the daughter would never has been married to the king, and live in paradise.
The king is very important in this fairytale, because he is the man, whose decisions both can bring peace and harmony, but also blood and evil things. He is the man who starts the excitement in the fairytale with his offer.
The little black thing with the long tail is actually the daughter’s trump and saves man, even the fact that he actually thinks he has the trump and thinks he will get the prize, because he doesn’t think she would guess his name, but she did. Then we think he is very smart, because he gave the daughter a task, which almost is impossible to figure out, we know she did, but she was also helped by the king, even through it wasn't expected. Besides that, he is a very weird little thing; he is not a human, but more like a troll, or another magically thing.

4) We have the introduction in the beginning of the fairytale. We hear about the mother who has cooked pies, and how the daughter eats them all. Later when the king comes, we here the introduction about, what the daughter has do and get through. Then we think the climax is right there, where the king, unknown about the situation, actually tells the daughter the little black things name. Because after here, you know how the conclusion will be, exactly that she guess his name, and he disappear for ever. The interest is maintained because we several times hear about how the daughter guesses the little black things name wrong, because it gives you a fear about how it all will end.

5) the environment is a bit old, you feel like to be in the middle ages, which maybe could be due by the fact, that you hear about they are spinning, and that there are a king. Especially these things make it feels like the middle ages. In the first part of the fairytale, in the introduction, we are in the normal world, without magic. But just as soon the daughter and the king were married, we move from the real/normal world to a magical world, where magically things can happen. Ex sample the little black thing, which has over natural skill’s because he is able to spin five skeins on one day, and he is also able, just to show up, and disappear again, without anyone see him.

6) And 7) if we have to take a look at the fairytale elements and expressions in this fairytale, it first of all stars very traditionally with “once upon a time”. Then it is also very traditionally that the characters don’t have an exactly name, but are just being called, “the daughter” “the king” and so on. There are also several repeating in the fairytale, as the little black thing with the long tail, every night comes to the daughter to help her to spin the same 5 skeins every night, and to ask her the same questions. Another thing that makes it looks like a fairytale is the very characteristic fairytale structure, where there is a young boy or girl, in this case a young girl, and where a big difference happens in concerned life, in this case, that the daughter is getting married with the king, who also is a very normal fairytale character. But afterwards here the young main character meet a task or problem she or he, has to solve, and in this case it is that the daughter has to guess the little black things name, and to spin all these skeins. And of course she succeeds and the little black thing disappeared, and no one ever saw him again. As said before it’s also a magical fairytale, because the little black thing is able so use magic, and besides that, he is also an animal, which also is a fairytale element. There are also several magic numbers, ex sample that the little black thing always has three tries for the daughter, and ex sample that the fairytale pass a timeline on 12 months. Besides all this, the story is told in Third person, omniscient, which gives the right fairytale atmosphere.

As we did it in lazy jack, we have tried to put “tom tit tot” into the actant model, because we think it is a brilliant way to give a general view over the fairytale, and to know what the meaning with the different characters are, and what their roles are. Actant model:

Sender = the king (because he is the man who can offer a paradise, and happiness)

Object = paradise and happiness (because that’s the thing the daughter is fighting for)

Receiver = the daughter (because she won against everyone, and passed the tasks)

Helper = it’s both the king, and the little black thing (the king, because he unknown about he was doing, helped the daughter to guess the black things name. The little black thing: because he helped the daughter to spin all the skeins, and thereby he is actually the daughters saves man).

Subject = the daughter (because she is the main character, and it is her, who has something to fight for).

Opponent = the king, and the little black thing (the king = he promised the daughter everything she wanted, if she could spin 5 skeins every day, in the last month. The little black thing: he spun all the skeins for the daughter, but as a pay, he wanted her, if she couldn’t guess his name during the last month).

Sender (the king)------------------------- object (paradise and happiness) ------------------------ receiver (the daughter)

Helper ( the king, and the little black thing)--------------- subject (the daughter)------------------- opponent (the king, and the little black thing)
