Indian Camp is a short story, it’s about how a child becomes a part of some brutal events: A bloody operation and a suicide.
On a dark cold night, the local doctor is summoned to an indian camp to assist. He and his very young son Nick are sitting in the stern of the boat. With them is the older male relative, George.
Later on inside the shanty nearest the road, a young indian lady lies on a wooden bunk. She’s in labour, and has been trying to get her baby born for two days. The doctor’s only option, is to perform a caesarean operation with his jackknife, and sew it up with nine-foot tapered gut leaders, without any anaesthetic. Nicks stands beside, and looks away so he can’t see what his father is doing with the placenta.
Afterwards the doctor is feeling quite exlated, and he arrogantly celebrates his success as a doctor, only to discover, that the lady’s husband who lies in the upper bunk, has commited suicide. The husband was apparently not able to handle his wife’s pain, or the racism of the white visitors.
Nick, who has observed the brutals events, asks questions as “ Do many, men kill themselves, Daddy?” and “Is dying hard, Daddy?”
