We all know the feeling of being different. Or do we? Most of us certainly know the feeling of it in some degree, but do we really know how much damage the sense of being different can cause? However, some people has discovered that all human beings are different from eachother. Some people would even say that being different is a very positive thing. Then why do we hate people who are not like the others? Why should being odd cause troubles? In the Scottish short story “ I can play `Schools’”, published in 1965 we meet a young girl and her mother whose relationship has been deteriorated by a lack of communication.
Communication has always been an important way of reaching an understanding between groups of individuals. Good relations between human beings are built on good communications skills. Lack of communication, on the other hand, has a very demolishing effect on relations and especially relationships.

The first character we meet is the narrator of the story who is writing a letter to her mother. The narrator is a woman living with her daughter. She is watching her daughter playing “schools” with her dolls. In the way, she describes the play it gives us the sense that this has happened before. “She was playing “Schools” with her dolls. They were “not attending”, and so she was scolding them ...” (page 1, line3-4) Here she is describing how her daughter is playing and her manner of doing so, she gives the sense that it is not the first time she has been watching her daughter playing alone with her dolls. The daughter is named Marian who is 7 years old and seems to be self-conscious. One of the reasons must be that she’s deaf and dumb, as it is described on page 3 line 93.” She’s deaf and dumb”. Her father was killed in a car accident, shortly before Marian was born. Marian has obviously never seen her father and therefore, we do not find out whether she misses him. However, the narrator is definitely feeling lonely as it is expressed on page 2, line 1-2. “I did not have him now, to share my days, to comfort me”.
Indeed, she has never thought of getting re-married. Before the terrible accident, the narrator and her husband obviously used to be madly in love and devoted to each other. “But I had loved Tom very much, so much that our days together were still too close to me” (page 2, line 23-24).

We all know the feeling of being different. Or do we?

Most of us certainly know the feeling /of it in/(to) some /degree/(extent), but do we really know how much damage the /sense/(feeling) of being different can cause?

However, some people ha/s/(ve) discovered that all human beings are different from /eachother/(each other).

Some people would even say that being different is a very positive thing.

Then (again,) why do we hate people who are not like the /others/(rest of us)?

Why should being /odd/(different) cause trouble/s/?

In the Scottish short story “ I can play `Schools’”, (which is) published in 1965(,) we meet a young girl and her mother whose relationship has /been/ deteriorated by /a/(the) lack of communication.

One of the reasons must be that she/’s/ (is) deaf and dumb, /as it is described/(which is stated) on page 3(,) line 93/./(:)” She’s deaf and dumb”.

Her father was killed in a car accident, shortly before Marian was born.

Marian has obviously never seen her father(, which is the reason) /and therefore, we do not/(for us not) find(ing) out whether she misses him.
