Utopia
Thomas More wrote Utopia in 1516. Utopia was an island where Thomas Mores ideals where created. Utopia is a result of the thoughts surrounding humanism.
On the Island Utopia, there are fifty-four cities, which all are the same size, large and well built. The cities have the same language, customs, institutions and laws. The laws are made by three of its wisest from each city, who once a year is sent to Amaurot, the chief city of the island.
Every city has at least ten miles of farm land, where there also is built houses, which are inhabited by the citizens, who come in turns. There are no landlords only husbandmen. There are at least forty men and women in the farm houses. Each year twenty from every household moves back to the city, after they have been in the farm house for a two-year period. The shifting means that every on has to do the hard work at some point.
The people in utopia do not use gold and silver as we do. Iron is much more worth, because it important and at more use then gold and silver. They use gold and silver on there bondmen, which are men who have broken the law. They use it at chains and jewellery as we do. But they see it as ugly and flashy. The also use it for children as toys, therefore children in there childish eyes they see it as beautiful, but they out grove this. Also fine clothes are looked down on, they all wear the same clothes.
People from our world visited the utopians. The people from our world, was looked down upon by the utopian. The people wore jewellery and expensive fabrics, which were by the utopians seen as badges of slavery, sign of punishment ore toys for children. For the utopian, the things that in our world is a sign of wealth and power, it only seemed shameful for the utopians.
A woman is not married before she is eighteen and a man not before he is twenty-two. If anyone has an affair before marriage, he will never be permitted to marry, unless a prince’s pardon remits the punishment. The punishment is so severe, that the fear prevents anyone to break the law.
Before marriage the utopians have a custom that can seam strange to our world. The woman and man, who are to be married, are presented naked to one another before marriage. The Utopians believes that there happiness relies on this marriage, so therefore one should make shore that both parties are attracted to on and another. The attraction between a man and woman are important, because the utopians do not allow divorce except for adultery or insufferable waywardness. The injured can change spouses, but the guilty part is forever forbidden to remarry. The Senate is only granted by the senate.
