Policewomen have suddenly become very popular in England – at least in the world of fiction. We have seen female detectives before, but policewomen who are good at others things, than comforting crying children and frisk females who have been arrested, have not been that usual. Lately there has been several serials in the television which has included policewomen as main characters, as an example the detective inspector Maggie Forbes in “The Gentle Touch” and the police inspector Kate Longton in “Juliet Bravo”.
As an example the serials shows the women’s struggle to survive in a police world dominated by men, but a theme which is just as important is the policewoman as a peace-keeper: she is being represented as the one who is capable of defusing a tense situation, contrary to her male colleagues who are often within an inch of messing up the situation totally.
By concentrating the policewoman the serials so to speak to kill two birds with one stone: On the one hand they seems progressive and liberal since they show the policewoman as a feminist pioneer and they tell that she is good at her job. But at the same time they are nostalgic and reassuring. They typical take place in a smaller provincial town faraway from London where they police have time to help an old lady to her missing dogs, where crimes solved and where you learn the victims to protect themselves better in the future.
Police serials have always been popular. The reason why the policewoman has become the main character is not only caused by the women’s movement. It is just as probable like they need a replacement for the nice, English bobby which has become a hard one to swallow after the many confrontations you have seen in the recent years where the police with visors, riot shields and laces have for en example faced miners and coloured immigrants.
The English would like to have a good faith in their police officers but anyway there is a limit for how unrealistic a serial can be.
