Nogle der vil skimte den her i gennem for de værste fejl?
When you turn thirteen you have just entered the puberty and it is also the beginning of a development to become an adult. There are a lot of new emotions and it does often start a lot of question about the new things happening to the body. You see things in different ways for an example boys see girls in another perspective: Earlier they saw them as stupid little girls and did not want to do anything with then but now they find them exciting and want to spend time with them.
Mikey has just turned thirteen and he on his way to enter the puberty. He has these frustrations you get when you enter the puberty. He also sees girls in a new way as he used to, he find them interesting. He has two friends, Cecil and Joey, and together they are the Three Mesquiteers. They spy on the girls and Mikey starts to think of them. There is one girl he notice more than the others, Clara Jowett. He finds her very attractive without knowing the real meaning of the word. He finds out, that girls are more than just silly, he finds out that they also are humans.
The story is written by Vincent Balville and it takes place in the past. It is a third person narrator.. In the story we follow Mikey’s journey to become older.
The three boys normally played, that they were in a fantasy world but when they find out that they are to old to play that game they put a stop to their play and then they replace it with another game: They watch the girls lying naked in their underwear making daisy chains. At that moment they are a bit older and they have taken a closer step to puberty.
At the time, Mikey is into the house he thinks about Clara Jowett. He wants her to be with him at he pictures how it would be if she were there. He is afraid of being there but he keeps thinking that Clara is looking at him so he wants to show her that he is mature and not afraid.
“.. he pictured the delight of anticipation on her face as, safely standing on ground level, she watched him pick his way over shattered stone and shale”1
When Mikey comes out from the house his childhood is about to fade away. The house could be a sort of a manhood test and he passed it. After that he sees a couple lying in the grass. Earlier he would have hated it but now he looks at them and imagine that it is him and Clara lying in the grass together.
Mikey has never tried to be in love with someone before – he has nor tried to feel the happiness or tried to be hurt by love. All that makes him innocent it could also makes him naïve because he do not know the consequences of love – he thinks everything is all kindness. In the song “Only Sixteen” by Sam Cooke two young people also fall in love. They also seems to be innocent and naïve. They were too young to fall in love and therefore they are not together anymore – they did not know, that there was a back of love were you can be hurt. But even though they were too young it seems like they liked each other very much and they had a great time together.
On the picture “The Proposal” from Paul Graf you see two people, a boy and a girl, sitting in the grass. The picture is called “The Proposal” so the boy I probably going to propose to the girl. You can compare this to the episode in “One Day When We Were Young” when Mikey sees the couple in the grass together and imagine that it is him and his “love”.
Puberty and the first love often stick together. The first love often happens in the teenage years. Just like Mikey – he finds out that girls are interesting and beautiful, it is like he has discovered a whole new kind of human. The first love is something special – also for Mikey. The love to the girl makes him more mature and helps him to understand that he is going to change. He is on his way to becoming an adult.
Meditation on a Line from Saint Teresa

The text is written by a man named Raymond Carver. He is describing sentence Saint Teresa once said and elaborate the meaning of the sentence and the words. He use two word which is difficult to use in daily speak: Soul and tenderness.
Saint Teresa lived 373 years ago she said:
“Words lead to deeds …. They prepare the soul, make it ready, and move it to tenderness.”2
It is funny why some word with the right meaning seems to solemn to pronounce. Raymond Carver use two words you do not use anymore in a “normal” sentence. Instead of we use other words which can, in some situations, not give the exactly same meaning like the other word. Maybe it is because we for an example connect some word with something that is sophisticated or we hear it in the church where they use very solemn words.
If we compare this with “One Day When We Were Young” I would take the two words he use and try to compare them with Mikey. Mikey feels the tenderness. He is about to be very vulnerable because he is in the puberty and that makes you more sensitive and you see the world in a new way and have easy to be hurt – because of the tenderness. The mind has something to do with your soul. Mikey’s mind is going to change very much in this period. His body is going to be totally different but he is also going to think in another than he us used to.
Many young people do not want to be older and therefore they do not their body to change and can not accept it. Someone also think that it is painful to show their “new” body.
