It was a lovely evening. Towards west the sun was about to set between a forest of television antennas and a warm autumn breeze blowed the petrol fumes towards the suburb. A couple of dead trouts floated down Themsen belly-up. Everything seemed normal. After some time I realized something was wrong. The first thing I noticed was some weird, yellow, oil in the water, followed by half a score of eggs. Then I saw more of the yellow oil and more and more dead fishes.

I had moved to London the previous year to become a guide. It is not that easy to become a tourist guide in London as you think. It takes half a year, and you have to pass an exam before getting the blue badge. It is a written paper containing 200 short questions, it is a practical test. And then finally your head is filled with information and facts, and you’re ready to receive tourists from all over the world. The Americans are my favourite tourists – despite they’re always so busy. They probably know: “Today’s Saturday, so it must be Italy”. I take that as a challenge and try to settle them down; I try my best to get them into a pub, especially one that sells good beer.

I went further towards Southhampton Row. We always shop on Lombard Street, so I was a little confused, seeing that I had never been to this supermarket. The store was brand new and huge; there was at least five minutes walk from one end to the other – with Muzak all way. I asked Larry to take a shopping trolley and follow me. Then I took my shopping list out of my pocket. “A jar of orange marmalade,” I read. I looked around. What a weird store; they hadn’t even put up the signs on the shelves.
