Abduction
A short story written by Shelagh Delaney.
1.
When you abduct something or someone you take it from its place perhaps its family to a unknown and unsafe place. You take the person away from the surroundings he or she is used to and make up some new. By doing that you can destroy the person mentally and make the person insecure. But this so called “abduction” is not always conscious.
In the short story “Abduction” Ann abducts her little brother away from his parents and brings him with her to London. She makes him more and more weak and more and more addicted to her by giving him allowance. He slowly becomes more insecure and he starts drinking.
Ann is a very self-assured woman. She is a paediatricien in London children’s hospital - she loves children and is good at her job. She sees herself as something who is a little bit more than everyone else.
“She was proud of herself and her achievements”1
Ann is a sister but it seems like her job working with children changes this sister role to at mother role. She begins to act like she is a mother to her little brother. He is much younger than she is and that could make it easier to live up to the role as his mother.
Ann’s little brother is born. He is in his teens and he is not thinking further about any consequences and says “yes”. He is a wild boy who has a lot of experience – in some areas:
“he’d had plenty of experience in the field of sex, drugs, smoking and drinking”2
Maybe he takes with Ann because he thinks that he can do exactly what he wants to do.
Ann gives his brother allowance and if he use them all very quickly she just gives him more money. Therefore he does not learn that there are imitations for what he can do. And when he gets older and begins to drink she also gives him money and she knows that he is spending them on booze.
The word “abduction” sounds vary much like the word “adoption” and it is probably not an accident. The word “adoption” can also be connected with the situation in the text: Ann takes her little brother with her to London – she adopts him. She sees herself as his mother.
Ann’s little brother later regrets that he went with her. He thinks that she has ruined his life:
“He’d wanted to run away, run back home to his mother and father. Was it possible to start all over again, he’d kept asking himself.”3
In the text “Mother” by Siouxsie and The Banshees we are told how a mother should be like.
“The word you learn to love..”4
“The one who keeps you warm” 5
Ann’s little brother did not have a mother to care about him. She was not there to keep him warm.
On the painting “A Man’s Head in a Woman’s Hair” by Edvard Munch we see a man who is waved in a woman’s hair. She has the man in her hand – he is stucked and she has the control over him. It could easily be Ann weaving her hair around her little brother. She tells him what to do and she decides everything in his life.
You can not just take a person away from its surroundings and its parents. A children or a teen needs their parents when they are about to grow up. They need them to tell what is wrong and what is right. In some cases some children or teens does not have their parents around them because of different causes. If we take Ann’s brother for an example. Maybe he would not have been an alcoholic if Ann did not take him away. Maybe his life would have been different or even better.

Fiction versus Non-Fiction
When we read fiction we most of all read about the imagination from one specific person and when we read non-fiction we read about reality – the imagination of reality. Therefore we learn a lot more about important things by reading non-fiction.
If we take the two texts as an example: Abduction (fiction) versus Adler’s Psychoanalytical Ideas on Development (non-fuction):
Abduction is a fiction and we do not learn anything to read about it. We mostly read fiction for pleasure and for entertainment.
Adler’s Psychoanalytical Ideas on Development is an article which helps us to understand the world. Some find non-fiction very boring and does only use it to be educated while other read it because they find it practical or enjoyable to read it.
Non-fiction helps us to understand the world while fiction entertains us. Some people find fiction very stupid because it does not learn us anything but if we look back in history all we remember is the books of fiction. So it is difficult to say that one of them is the most important because we use them in different ways. Fiction gives us a “made up world” and it can be a sort of an escape from reality and it is sometimes a very good thing while non-fiction gives us the whole truth and maybe some people are scared of that?
