Review
The play The Beauty Queen... from 1996, starting point in a variant of the same theme as Frank Pig... The dream about a complete and normal life despite of the surroundings and circumstances, which are to make the realization of the dream impossible.
Here the main character is a forty-year old unmarried woman, Maureen, who of different reasons is stuck on her mother, a seventy-year old frail and manipulating widow, Mag.
As the starting point is Maureen not isolated as a child of parents, who belongs to the absolutely bottom of the society, but as a woman who is over that age where she after traditional (chauvinist) expectations could be a wife and a mother etc.
This narrowing of her ( livsudfoldelsesmuligheder)strengthen of the fact that she and her mother live long out at the exotically Irish(Bøhland), where you can’t get a proper job and therefore either anyone proper men and where the height of variety usually makes out “ There goes a calf...” , as a young local man expresses it.
In this hopeless life situation the play starts, as you see the endless and bitter squabbling between the two women: Squabbling, which time after time reveals lifelong frustrations – more than standardized Irish themes like bitterness against England, divided thoughts about the USA and splitted attitudes to Ireland and the Irish people.

When Maureen apparently gets the possibilty to break out of the (Trøsteløsheden)and vin a complete life, it shows us, partly that she under the pressure of the surroundings ( slår over i fantasteri og vold)....................
Partly that this is a move, which she allready showed in her youth.
So saying/ with this the play is gradually become a tragedy ( with evil intrigues/ plots, fatal indifference, insanity and murder) – carefully prepared and with a use of dramatic irony and a light outdistanced blach humour , which maybe makes the horror and the hopelessa bit easier to carry., sometimes to the actors, sometimes to the readers and the audience.
The ending of the play is open – but not in a talented way, not like a cheap trick, which are helping the play to be very usefull in the teaching connections.
As a head motive the song, Spinning wheel, (tematiserer).......... Maureen’s romantic longings by telling about a young girl , who is sitting at the spinning wheel, while her blind grandmother dozes in the background and the lover knocks the window, where upon the two lovers together run out in the nature... of course also the title (tematiserer)........– a bit ironic- Marureen’s longings.
