”A mari usque ad mare” that is the motto of Canada, which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean, to the Pacific Ocean, and from the North Pole to the 45th degree of latitude. The country is rather big, but there only lives about 24 million people in this big country, the majority in the southern part of the country.
The native populations, the Eskimos (Inuit) and Indians make a total of 2% of the population as such, but about half of the population in the Northwest Territories. The rest of the population consists of 45% English and 28% from French origin. The rest are immigrants from all over the world.
Even though English is the most spoken language, Canada has since 1969 had two official languages, French and English, which means that the public offices and institutions have to serve people in the language the whish to speak. This bilingualism is probably the result of the special rights, which the inhabitants I Quebec acquired, when the Englishmen conquered Canada from the Frenchmen. Quebec remained as a cohesive French speaking area.
Just like America, Canada was “discovered” long time before it was discovered. Already about year 1000 the Scandinavians were cutting down trees on the east cost, and in the 15th century, the French, Spanish and Portuguese fishermen were on Newfoundland. One means that the name Canada is due to a mistake. The Indians used the word Kanata for settlement. Columbus understood that as the name of the country itself, and that has since then been the official name
In the 17th century England and France were interested in the areas in North America, which the Spanish have not already claimed as theirs. The war between the two countries in the 18th century had the consequence that Canada was assigned to the English crown. After America’s independence in the year 1776, many American colonists who remained loyal towards England, moved north and settled in the English dominated Canada.

Hov, jeg kom til at poste den før jeg selv fik skrevet noget, men jeg ville sætte pris på hvis nogen af jer gad at kigge den igennem for fejl.
