Music in the Underground

It is an “efterårsmorgen” in London and the start of a new working day for Taiken Mikkola. With a million of other people, the 18-year-old “finne” goes down to the Underground (på dansk: går ned til undergrunden) to start the work of the day. But as Mikkola comes down to the platform of the Underground, he pulls a trumpet and is already at work. It is hard, both for the feet and the pride but Mikkola’s humour does not seem to be damaged. ”London is the best place” he says, as he looks at the passenger’s faces. You can not make money in New York’s or Paris’s Undergrounds, but the Londoner’s attitude/opinion for young people is very friendly. On a working day of 10 hours Mikkola can make as much as £ 30. The idea is not just Mikkola’s. To survive and to be able to buy bread and at the baker’s and meat at the butcher’s over 500 young musicians from all over the world plays in the Underground of London. They play everything from the guitar and the harp. Mikkola and many of these foreigners spend the cold months of the year in the warmth of the Underground. And the warmth is more friendly here than the one on the streets. But it is not enough to be able to sing and play. You have to have an actor’s ability to look innocent, if the cops show up. Taiken Mikkola has decided to stay in England for three years afterwards he doesn’t know what to do. This is many young people’s situation today. Because of unemployment they feel restless and futureless.
