Famous immigrant in Denmark Jacob A. Riis

Jacob A. Riis was born 3rd may 1849 in Ribe, Denmark. He worked as a carpenter in Copenhagen before immigrating to the United States in 1870, by steamer.
Here started his new live. First as a tramp among society's lowest, then as an admired debater and advocate for the homeless and the poor.
He arrived during an era of social turmoil. Large groups of migrants and immigrants flooded urban areas in the years following the Civil War seeking prosperity in a more industrialized environment. Jacob A. Riis spent most of his nights in police-run poor houses, whose conditions were so ghastly that Riis dedicated himself to having them shut down. After years of extreme poverty and hardship he finally found employment as a police reporter for the New York Tribune in 1877. Riis’ friend president Theodore Roosevelt called him “The most useful citizen of New York”. Together they had, while Roosevelt was chief constable/commissioner of police, fought to create better lives for the poorest people. When Jacob A. Riis published the book “How the Other Half lives” in 1890, he revealed a world, which only a few had heard and worried about. The mass immigration to New York had created monstrous residence conditions. Riis told about poverty, need/distress and the crime. Jacob Riis' photography, taken up to help him document the plight of the poor, made him an important figure in the history of.
In the intervening 44 years he had through his work as a reporter, social reformist, lecturer and photographer left a crucial stamp on the American society. His life-long tireless work to change poor people's housing conditions in the cities - and with it their living conditions - was an incredible act of pioneering.
