Networking medium

As discussed in our previous assignment, cabling is a well-thought decision of any business holder. Not only does cabling play a major role in business, but also the main 4 factors of production, which are ; labor, land, capital and entrepreneurship. The argument here is not about which one of these 4 factors is the most important one. The argument is how to balance all of these in a descent manner. Like our lives, nothing is very easy. If we make decisions, that decision not only affects us, but also the people related to us. Same goes with businesses and computers. Everything in the modern world is very tightly linked with each other and therefore every decision affects every factor of production. Labor is the wages that u r paying off and finding the right labor for the right price is a real entrepreneur. Labor depends on your specialization, field, experience and motivation to work n with all these perspectives is a wage decided. Land is a second factor of production. Land value is determined by the location your business is set up in. In market u will definitely have to pay high amounts of rents and your electricity will be around 20 percent more since u r in a commercial market but the payback is the running customer flow in it, which balances off your sale with your net incomes. Then we look at capital. Capital is the investment in terms of machinery, equipment, tools and all the other things that are needed to make the product from raw to sellable e.g. in paper industry, trees and machinery that turn tree into paper are the capital for that business and of course other tools to it too. Last but not least comes entrepreneur. By far the most defined meaning of entrepreneur could be the one who risks his/her money into a business to get a descent rollover from it. Entrepreneur is the one who has to balance the other 3 factors of production to make out his/her net.

This was a brief introduction about businesses. Now getting to our main point which is networking. Networking is basically controlling the flow of information from one place to another. As we all know, information is being sent and received all over the world every micro second and it travels through light, which makes it so fast. This flow of enormous heavy loads of information all around the world needs to be monitored and organized so the flow don’t get jammed or misplaced and that’s where our networking comes out handy. Without networking, the world we live in would be jammed in an hour’s time. Networking is used by every one daily on daily basis e.g. in phones, banks, satellites, communication, computers, businesses and many more. It’s hard to mention any place that doesn’t use some kind of networking at any moment.

The question that we have been brought up with is what kind of networking is suitable for what kind of work. Media is what networking is transmitted over. There a many different Medias, one can transfer information or data through. Different media have different properties and are therefore used in different environments for different purposes.

Copper is the most common network medium, which has served our communication needs for over a century now and will keep on serving us for many more decades. Why copper? Copper as we all know is a very good conductor of electricity and therefore engineers have become very good in sending electrical signals over copper wires and detecting them with a great deal of fidelity at the other end…its used mainly in telephone lines

Glass - photons are basic particles of light. The good thing about photons are that they are not affected by interference from electrical devices or radio waves, which is a major concern if u r sending information in high speed over copper networks. Fiber optics is a networking technology developed to exploit the communications medium over light in strong strands of glass. Fiber optics has started to play a major role in Pakistan to enhance better internet quality and speed by transmitting information through glass like caves underground which are undisturbed by any kind of data sharing happening. This keeps it from being blocked or anything. It’s just like the underground metros and rail systems that are used in first world countries. Light can travel many miles in this less expensive single mode fiber optic cable without signal loss.

Air is an another medium of sending information... with glass and copper medium u definitely need a cable to connect to the computer but when u send information through air i.e. infrared or Bluetooth, u don’t need any cabling since all is done wireless. This kind of information sharing is most commonly used in all mobiles now through infra red and the most recently used blue tooth. No wires, no cables, no hassle. This is the new world of wireless technology. Also is this air transmission used in our laptops nowadays where we try to avoid wires as much as we can. The world is mobile now, meaning that it’s a moving world so why should not our technology and computers be? This technology will over the decades take over the glass and copper medium in a high dose but copper medium will never be exploited completely though, in my concern. Infra red is a line of sight technology. Only draw back to this technology is its range. There is very limited range to infrared and blue tooth. They can go up to max 3 blocks or 200 meters at local range. There is much research happening on it to extend the range problem which engineers say can be solved over some years. Also one more draw back is the loss of information is possible since information will be sent wireless, many times can information collide with one another but that’s something to be researched upon in the coming years.

Radio is another concern. This is another way of sending information through air. Engineers have almost been sending information over this medium for almost as long as they have over copper wires. The good thing about radio waves is that the radio waves can go through walls, unlike air i.e. infra red and Bluetooth. Radio medium is also immune to rain and snow which makes it a better option for sending information in bad weather places. The problem with radio medium is that its been heavily used by television, radio and government agencies, that there is hardly any radio medium left to be used by computers else radio can in the future be the most known medium

This was all about networking mediums. Our next assignment is about protocols, which I can briefly tell the meaning of. Protocols are the agreed upon ways that computers exchange information with each other. It’s basically about the control over the flow of information between the computers. We will discuss this deeply in our next assignment. Thanks!
