Two Kinds

The story take place in the late 1950s and the year have a big influence on the story. The Second World War was over and many people moved to American to start a new life, with new homes and new jobs. In this period beauty competitions became very popular in America and it also has a link to the story.

The narrator has a very strained relationship to her mother. They are different in many ways and have not the same views about the future.
In the beginning the narrator really tries to live up to her moms expectations. Not only because of her mother but also because she finds it interesting too. By the time she realizes that she can not live up to her mother’s big expectations and instead of being disappointed she decides that she wants not let her mother change her. It is a sign that she goes through a development and becomes a little bit more self-assured.
When her mother stops making demands on her she does not really feel better. She still thinks of her mother’s spoken and she is a bit ashamed of that she has not achieved anything. She wonders that how her mother ever could expect so big things from her, things that were impossible. But she never talks with her mother about her thoughts because she finds it very hard.

The mother is very naïve because she believes that everything is possible in American and in spite of this she always thinks that her child could be an infant prodigy. I also think that she has a great loss to her parents, husband and twins and instead of being sad all the time she is trying to do her only child to a perfect one. She really believes that it could happen and she does her best to realize it. She forgets to think about her daughter’s needs and instead she only think of herself. In a way you can say that she is selfish, and of course she is, but I think it is because she has become brainwashed with the saying: “You could be everything you wanted to be in American”. She is very hard to her daughter and especially when she says; “Only two kinds of daughters”, she shouted in Chinese. “Those who are obedient and those who are follow their own minds! Only one kind of daughter can live in this house. An obedient daughter!” It is not her purpose to hurt her daughter she only thinks that she do it in a good way.

It does not seem like they have a lot of money to spend. “We couldn’t afford to buy one, let alone piano lessens”. “My mother had traded house-cleaning services for weekly lessons and a piano for me to practice on every day”. It seems like they have to work hard to have money enough. They probably lost a lot in the war and almost begin a new life from the beginning.

In the end of the story the narrator get a proof from her mother that she has a natural talent and it probably gives her some new hopes for the future. In many years she has been suppressed of her mother and feels that she was a mistake. But in the end she get satisfied that she is not a mistake and the way she get it, is because her mother gives her a piano. The piano has been a symbol of her mom’s dreams about the future and it was also where the narrator has spoiled her mom’s wishes and hopes, because she could not play it well. But at last the mother gives it away because she has learned to accept that her child is not an infant prodigy.

The title of the story “two kinds” is the (problemstilling). The one kind is the way her mother wants her to be, as an infant prodigy who has a lot of talents. And the other kind is the way the true narrator is when she is absolutely herself and does not change.
The narrator is against her mother and turns the mother’s back on. Today it is quite normal to protest against ones parents but in the 1950s it was more rarely and many did not have the courage do it.
