Why has History Always Forgotten Women?
All history books are about men and men’s decisions, and after all half of the world has always been women.
How did they live, what did they do, what thoughts did they have, what did they think of life? These are some of the things, which female research workers have started to take an interest in.
One of them says: “When I went to school, the women were described as passive and reactionary. But I could not accept this prejudice. Nor that the women were forgotten. So therefore I now work with the new writing of history.
I mean, of course, history ought to be about human beings and not only about women. But right now, is it very important to concentrate on women, because they have been completely neglected. Therefore is it very important to criticize the old-fashioned history books, written by men about men. Instead we have to write new history books, so women can read about women and in that way constructs a historical identity.
Only if the young generations of women learn to respect their “foremothers” can they learn to respect themselves.
