Poverty
1. Write a summary of What is Poverty?

The article “what is poverty” is about poverty in England and in the other industrial countries. There are two doctors in the article there speak about poverty, the one doctor is from England and the other doctor is from Africa. The doctors mean poverty today is worse in England than in Africa. Because it is spiritual poverty in England, it is poverty of the soul. But in Africa is it material poverty. In England they don’t eat together with their families, but heats already prepared food in the microwave. They eat by themselves although the rest of the family is present.

2. Give an outline of the various attitudes to poverty in the four texts.

There are a lot of different attitudes towards poverty in the texts. The first text is describing the two kinds of poverty: material poverty and poverty of soul. The poverty of soul is so much worse. In the second text they focus on child poverty and how some familie in Britain are considered poor when they have to struggle to make everything work out. They don’t have enough of money for the children to go to school trips or get new uniforms when the old one gets too worn out. The third text is about how poverty is defined in the United States. Many of American people who are poor have plenty of food to eat every day, TV’s, a car and pretty much everything necessary in life. They are only considered poor because they are not so rich as the average American. The last text focuses on the definition of being extremely poor with no food, schools, hospitals etc. and how nothing is done to solve the poverty. So the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
3. Comment on the following statement: “… the worst poverty is in England – and it is not material poverty but poverty of soul.“
People in England don’t have a heart because the state gives them a house, food and medicine. So they don’t have to work. So in the end they have lost their heart because they don’t work as hard.

4. Write a speech (150-200 words) to be given at your school in which you call on your fellow students to engage in the fight against poverty.

I am sure you have all heard of poverty. It is something we see almost every day in the newspapers and the televisions. We see hungry human beings looking much like skeletons, children with no parents, no food and no clean water to drink. And it still hurts to look at these heartbreaking stories; we have grown used to them and learned how to tune them out so they will not haunt us. But that is just ignoring a very serious problem and pretending that it does not exist. And that is an attitude, which only makes the problem biger. We need to see the fact that poverty is a big part of this world and millions of human being live a life without food, clean water, schools, hospital or even a decent house to live in. We need to start giving back some of all the wealth we have in our lives. We can’t start next week or tomorrow, we must do it ng today. So I highly encourage you all to start making donations and giving away old clothes or toys when you get home. imagining how your life would be if you did’nt have anything. We all have to do everything we can to make poverty history.
